Math Program Details
Math Majors Degrees Math Majors may pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA), or a Bachelor of Science degree. The latter has three options:
"Applied". A program for the student who wishes to prepare for either applied work in Mathematics or graduate work in some other field.
"Pure". A program for the student who is seeking a broad background in Mathematics or who wishes to study mathematics at the graduate level.
"Stat". A program for the student who wishes to emphasize Statistics or who intends to study Statistics at the graduate level.
Throughout the BA and in the BS degree programs, the department attends to education and teaching oriented courses.
Ongoing activities
Math Club
Among this year's initiatives there will be a OPPORTUNITIES meeting, about REU (research experiences for undergraduates), GREF (the national science foundation graduate fellowships), Teach for America and career choices. Other activities include the classical ZOME day (see the mobile sculpture in the Mullins Library), Pi Day and many accessible, exciting math talks by local and visiting mathematicians. AWSM
The Arkansas Women in Statistics and Mathematics (AWSM, pronounced "awesome") was created in 2002 as a support and discussion group for female students and faculty involved in the mathematical sciences. Women are still a minority in the scientific community worldwide: among AWSM's chief goals is to foster, encourage and promote the participation of women in the hard sciences at the University of Arkansas. Among this year's activities there will be special public lectures, and the new initiative called Math News from Around the World, concerning news of mathematical interest from the media. For more information please visit

We invite all interested students to the next AWSM recruiting meeting:
Thursday, October 15, 3_30-4:30pm SCEN 322.
There will be free pizza and pop. At the meeting we'll discuss ideas for AWSM activities for 2009/2010. Also, at the recruiting meeting there will be a short presentation by Math major and Honors student Sam Meadors on her on a senior paper on ``Gender Differences in Mathematics Education''.
AWSM can be reached by e-mail: awsm@uark.edu.
Putnam Team
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is a yearly contest of mathematical problems, held every first Saturday of December and it is administered by the Mathematical Association of America. Enrollment in the University of Arkansas Putnam Team is now open. Please sign up if you are interested.
The Enhanced Learning Center
The Enhanced Learning Center provides walk-in tutoring at no extra cost for students in a variety of courses including Chemistry, Physics, Foreign Languages, and Math courses from Intermediate Algebra through Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. They operate in 8 locations around campus and are open Sunday-Friday. ELC tutors are generally Junior and Senior level Math, Physics, and Engineering majors who have been successful in their studies.
